Lux Aeterna Dance Company
December 30, 2007 - Kujo
Kujo was in a Levi's commercial:
LUX AETERNA BIO Lux Aeterna Dance Company is an interdisciplinary dance and physical theater company committed to the creation of an eclectic and powerful dance vocabulary through the fusion of various movement forms, such as ballet, modern, Brazilian capoeira, gymnastics, and most importantly, breaking (also known as break-dancing). Artistic director and choreographer Jacob "Kujo" Lyons sheds the movement standards and limitations imposed on most choreographers by convention, and instead explores movement with a very open and fresh attack. The boundaries delineating the myriad movement styles in Lux Aeterna's repertoire are obliterated, and the audience is provided with a visceral and compelling visual experience that ranges from high-octane, hyper-gymnastic and electrifying, to serene, beautiful and lyrical. Lux Aeterna has been nominated for two Lester Horton Dance Awards: Outstanding Achievement in Performance - Company, and the Dance Innovator Award (for artistic Director Jacob "Kujo" Lyons). Past performances have been held at the Alex Theatre in Los Angeles, the Philips Center in Gainesville, the John Anson Ford Amphitheatre in Hollywood, the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco, and the Bovard Auditorium at USC. Here is an article about Kujo in the L.A. Times, from the Sunday, December 30th, 2007 issue: Faces to Watch in Dance for 2008 JACOB 'KUJO' LYONS BREAK DANCER-CROSSOVER CHOREOGRAPHER WHO'S NOT SLOWING DOWN THE B-boy/break-dance scene is a world unto itself, and although Lyons has been a fixture in it for 15 years, the rest of us discovered him only recently, when he turned up as a stunt dancer for various local companies -- doing handstands on ice, for example, or fearsome gymnastic whirling balances that even L.A.'s hell-for-leather modernists don't attempt. But he didn't stop there: He slowed down complex steps for maximum control and even found a dimension of lyricism in them, and he premiered his inventive crossover choreography at some of the Southland's most prestigious showcase events. At 31, he still dances brilliantly and heads his own company (Lux Aeterna), but he also helps create opportunities for others in such portmanteau events as "Breaking the Cypher," which he co-produced at the John Anson Ford Amphitheatre in October. He's obviously poised for breakout success in 2008, and it's possible that commercial dance will gobble him up ASAP. But some of us are hoping that his street style and aptitude for contemporary dance theater will keep him grounded and intent on exploring realms of physical prowess that no one in any academy ever envisioned. - Lewis Segal, LA Times Here's what the critics have to say about Lux Aeterna: Metanoia @ Celebrate Dance (March 2008), Alex Theatre, Glendale, CA With his brilliant quintet "Metanoia," Jacob "Kujo" Lyons took his radically reconceptualized street-dance style into the realm of the spiritual, slowing down B-boy maneuvers and gymnastics until they became a perfect if unlikely complement to Arvo Part's agonized "Credo." At one point, Lyons choreographed a trio that amplified the cantilevered balances he was exploring at that moment in a duet with Sarah Moser, a sequence as daring structurally as it was physically -- and drop-dead awesome in its millennial bravura. - Lewis Segal, LA Times Serendipendence II @ LA Dance Invitational (September 2007), Nate Holden PAC, Los Angeles, CA "...A radical partnering experiment...a beautifully controlled gymnastic adagio (with) amazing contorted balances...that brilliantly translated women's spiritual strengths into unusual physical feats." - Lewis Segal, Los Angeles Times Sephiroth @ Spectrum (February 2007), El Portal Theatre, North Hollywood, CA "...Jacob "Kujo" Lyons and Hokuto "Hawk" Konishi exuded nightmare chic as they flipped their way to glory in Lyons' hypergymnastic "Sephiroth," with everyone in the five-member Lux Aeterna cast looking menacing in matching his-'n'-her full-body tattoos." - Lewis Segal, Los Angeles Times Navaras @ San Francisco Hip Hop Dance Fest (November, 2006), San Francisco, CA "L.A.'s Lux Aeterna Dance Company was something else altogether, a septet of capoeira-trained daredevils who strut like Cirque du Soleil characters before launching into flips or holding Gumby-like handstands that make yoga look like child's play. Jaw-dropping? Yes." - Rachel Howard, San Francisco Chronicle "One real misfit was Lux Aeterna Dance Company from Los Angeles, a septet of sleekly buffed and painted. Theirs was an athletically showy but emotionally hard-edged physicality...." - Rita Felciano, Dance View Times "Los Angeles-based Lux Aeterna (a great name for a company) bowed at the festival with Jacob "Kujo" Lyons' Navaras, a seven dancer opus involving sculptural tableaux, body painting, sudden dives to the floor, infusions of Brazilian capoeira and extremely effective lighting." - Allan Ulrich, Voice of Dance "The brawny Lux Aeterna had a slightly different take, merging capoeira with hip hop beats in a more fully-realized work titled 'Navaras.' Colored in twining silver body paint against a blood red screen, the five dancers seemed tinged with the slime of urban dystopia. Less refined than gymnastic, nevertheless, the dancers made good use of their charismatic physicality, and Jacob "Kujo" Lyons' fearless tumbles across the floor, planches and gymnastic flares, while seemingly out of context, were impressive nonetheless." - Mary Ellen Hunt, Contra Costa Times Navaras @ Spectrum (August 22, 2006), Hollywood, CA "...Choreography to flip for...Combined flamboyant gymnastics with surging modern or jazz dance - components juxtaposed with ultimate flash in Jacob "Kujo" Lyons' large-scale show piece 'Navaras'...." - Lewis Segal, LA Times ========================= Lux Aeterna's new demo reel, edited by Ameenah Kaplan. ========================= "Beached" from "Breaking the Cypher" Ford Amphitheatre Hollywood, CA October 2007 Choreography: Jacob "Kujo" Lyons and dancers Dancers: Jacob "Kujo" Lyons, Amy "Catfox" Campion, Anibal "Animal" Sandoval, Steve Cisneros, Sara "Ms. Mighty" Fenton ========================= "Lux Underwater" from "Breaking the Cypher" Ford Amphitheatre Hollywood, CA October 2007 Director: Alex "Journey" Mercado Choreography: Collaborative effort on behalf of Lux Aeterna and Alex Mercado Dancers: Jacob "Kujo" Lyons, Amy "Catfox" Campion, Anibal "Animal" Sandoval, Steve Cisneros, Sara "Ms. Mighty" Fenton ========================= "Navaras" San Francisco Hip Hop Dance Fest Palace of Fine Arts San Francisco, CA November 2006 Choreography: Jacob "Kujo" Lyons in collaboration with dancers Dancers: Amy "Catfox" Campion, Sara "Ms. Mighty" Fenton, Mariesha "Gifted Element" Griffin, Hokuto "Hok" Konishi, Jacob "Kujo" Lyons ========================= "Sephiroth" Carnival The Key Club West Hollywood, CA February 2007 Choreography: Jacob "Kujo" Lyons in collaboration with dancers Dancers: Amy "Catfox" Campion, Sara "Ms. Mighty" Fenton, Mariesha "Gifted Element" Griffin, Hokuto "Hok" Konishi, Jacob "Kujo" Lyons ========================= Kujo's Demo Reel edited by Alex "Journey" Mercado December 2005 ========================= |
